Final Score: Pistons 109, Nets 97

The Nets (3-10) lost to the Detroit Pistons (5-8) this afternoon by a score of 109-97.

The Least You Should Know

The Nets led by seven at half-time after a 32-point second quarter. But the team succumbed to its Achilles heel by falling apart in the third quarter and was outscored 34-15 in the frame.

Brooklyn made a bit of a run to get back within five with just over three minutes remaining, but it ultimately wasn’t enough.

Joe Johnson shot lights out from the field. He scored a season-high 34 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including hitting a career-high eight three-pointers.

Detroit had five players in double figures: Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Brandon Jennings, Kyle Singler and Rodney Stuckey. Stuckey led the Pistons with 27 points off the bench. Jennings (14 points, 10 assists) and Monroe (18 points, 11 rebounds) had double-doubles.

The Pistons won the rebounding battle, 44-35, and grabbed 13 offensive boards. Detroit also outscored the Nets in the paint, 56-22, and scored 29 points off 18 Nets’ team turnovers.

It’s basically a broken record with this team. Play a decent first half and then just completely shut down in the third quarter. The 34 points was the most the Nets have allowed in a third quarter all season.

What’s even worse is that the Nets were outscored 20-0 in the paint in that third quarter. That’s pathetic.

After scoring 13 points in the second quarter, Joe Johnson didn’t get his first look in the second half until after the halfway point of the third quarter. The team really needed to ride his hot hand coming right out of the gate in the second half.

We knew the matchup of Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond against the Nets without Brook Lopez wasn’t going to be pretty. But it wound up being even worse than expected.

The Nets are now 1-6 against Eastern Conference teams and have lost five straight games. It’s no surprise that the “boo-birds” were out in force during the fourth quarter at Barclays Center.

Brooklyn heads across the border to Toronto Tuesday night to take on the Raptors. Tip is set for 7:00 PM.
