NEW YORK — As the NBA coaching vacancies pile up around the league and we see assistant coach’s names pop up on team’s radars, it is worth once again asking a question that Moke Hamilton asked a while ago.

Should the Nets give Patrick Ewing a call?

Ewing has been wondering the same thing, and it sounds like he is hoping for it.

Patrick Ewing is one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, had his jersey retired by the New York Knicks, which now hangs in Madison Square Garden. He has also been an assistant coach in the NBA over the better part of the last decade, holding gigs for the Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets, where he coached under Stan Van Gundy and Jeff Van Gundy, respectively.

That begs the question, why won’t the Brooklyn Nets, or any other team for that matter, hire Ewing as head coach?

With a trifecta of coaches around 70 years old rumored as potential candidates, including Phil Jackson, Larry Brown and Jerry Sloan, why wouldn’t the most accomplished basketball player in the New York area over the last 30 years be considered?

Mike Greenberg of ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike asked Ewing that question Friday morning when he appeared on the show to talk about the 2013 NBA Playoffs.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Ewing candidly responded.

He continued.

“You know what? I’m putting in the work. I’ve been an assistant coach for nine, 10 years. I’m trying to learn my craft, become better at it. I really don’t know. All I can do is just continue to work, continue to knock on doors. Hopefully that one team will decide to give me an opportunity and give me the opportunity to be successful or to fail.”

Up until this point, Ewing has only been given passing consideration for head coaching gigs. Should that change?

We’ve seen many first-time head coaches have success, most notably the man who helms the team that eliminated the Nets from the playoffs, Tom Thibodeau of the Chicago Bulls.

Should Ewing be given a call by the Nets?

With the seemingly endless amount of candidates being added to the Nets “short list,” it probably would not hurt.
